| When you think about Kelowna, you probably picture sandy beaches along the shores of Lake Okanagan, sun-soaked days, and rows of orchard and vineyard reaching nearly right into the city. Kelowna is the largest city in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, and it offers all the urban amenities and entertainment that you require while still in a resort-town setting. But the charm of rural living so close to an urban centre is what visitors will truly fall in love with. Travellers with a curiosity for Kelowna's agricultural heritage and a hankering for light activity can access the quiet country roads around Kelowna on a guided cycling tour. This behind-the-scenes peek at life in Kelowna is a wonderful way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. |

Settlement in Kelowna began in 1859 when the legendary Father Charles Pandosy pre-empted land along the banks of what is currently Mission Creek on Benvoulin Road. Now a heritage site, Father Pandosy's Mission is open for viewing its genuine 19th century log buildings including a church, school and residence. Just a few kilometers to the north is the site of one of Kelowna's earliest ranches, acquired by John McDougall in 1861. Guisachan Heritage Park, as it is known today, was purchased from McDougall by the Earl and Countess of Aberdeen in 1890. The original Guisachan House, built in 1891, is now a popular restaurant that welcomes guests to dine in elegance, stroll through the surrounding Perennial Gardens, view the heritage buildings and visit the avenue of trees.

Ogopogo: The legendary lake creature was first sighted in 1872 by the celebrated pioneer Mrs. Allison. Ogopogo is dark green in color and wriggles through the water like a worm. Most sightings seem to report seeing several humps sticking out of the water, at least five feet apart. Ogopogo is an elusive creature so make sure you always have your camera handy! |
