Similkameen Native Translation of Keremeos
"Cut in two by a stream of water"
(one of the few Salish peoples to sound the letter 'r'.)
While visiting Keremeos take advantage of the local parks:
Memorial Park has an outdoor swimming pool, a wading pool and water park, as well as a children's playground. Pine Park on 12th Avenue alongside the river with its great Ponderosa Pines is a wonderful place for a leisurely stroll.  Take a walk along the dyke. This is a great place for bird watching. The new Riparian Park next to Pine Park features a restored riverbed habitat with rare native plants with a wide variety of wildflowers and native birds

Keremeos Weather

The community of Hedley was once a prosperous gold mining town. The rock cliffs to the east of present day village give visitors a chance to view the folded rock strata, the openings of mining shafts and mine buildings.

ATTRACTIONS

The Grist Mill: In 1877 this site was founded by Barrington Price as a place of business.  The mill and store worked together to serve the needs of local ranchers, native people, miners and travelers of the historic Dewdney Trail.

The Heritage Gardens
Gardening styles, like fashions, change with the times.  Victorian tastes favoured diversity and novelty, and seed companies tempted gardeners with hundreds of varieties.  Today, only a few are commonly available.    Heritage plants are living artefacts, so the site gardens are for both preservation and display.  Be sure to see the 'Heirloom Apple Orchard', 'Heritage Wheat Fields' and explore the natural grassland slopes nearby.  Heritage seeds are available for sale at the Mill Store!

HISTORICAL SITES

Mascot Mine, Nickel Plate Mtn.
Hedley, B.C.

In 1898 gold was discovered at this location.  The mine yielded $50 million worth of gold, silver and copper before it closed in 1955.

"The mine was built on a very steep slope, high up the side of the mountain.  Mineworkers lived and worked here.  A cure-all for sleepwalkers!"

The Upper Similkameen Indian Band has developed the former mine site, perched high above the tiny Similkameen community of Hedley, into a first class tourist attraction.

Over 500 steps lead visitors down the mountainside and through the 80 year-old buildings that made up the original mine site. Interpretive signage and well-informed guides explain details of each building and landmark.

The Similkameen Museum museum offer's information about the way of life in the Similkameen Valley from years past The Similkameen Museum has many interesting displays including an original jail cell, a 1920's kitchen with laundry and butter making equipment, and other household articles of that era, mining equipment, farm machinery, a photo display, old maps of the area and many other items.

Red Bridge (currently highway connection to the Ashnola River Valley) The Red Bridge is one of many visible reminders of the Similkameen's past. It was built by the Great Northern Railway, which had secured a charter in Canada under the name of Victoria, Vancouver & Eastern Railroad in 1907, during the gold mining era.

In 1860 the Hudson Bay Company closed down Fort Okanagan in American territory and transferred it's staff and stock to Keremeos. This H.B.C. post was closed in 1872, and the Keremeos post office was opened five years later. Keremeos is the only Indian place name in the interior of B.C. to contain an "R". Keremeos means creek that has cut its way across the flats (for Keremeos Creek).

The Sportsmen Slide
Large talus slopes formed over countless centuries of erosion rather than as a catastrophic event as many believe, this massive talus slope is a rare geological oddity.
